Is UL 94 V-0 Enough When Buying Flame-Retardant EV Battery Insulation?

Buying battery insulation simply because the datasheet says “UL 94 V-0” can create a false sense of thermal-runaway protection.

UL 94 V-0 should be treated as one material-selection parameter, not proof that an insulation sheet can withstand an EV battery thermal runaway event. Buyers should also verify tested thickness, dielectric performance, temperature exposure, mechanical integrity, thermal barrier behavior and the requirements of the finished battery application.

UL Solutions describes UL 94 as a series of small-scale flammability tests. For V-0, the specimen is evaluated for burning time, afterglow and flaming-drip behavior under controlled test conditions.[1]

What Does UL 94 V-0 Actually Tell a Battery Buyer?

Reading “V-0” as “fireproof” can lead procurement teams to approve a material for conditions it was never tested to survive.

Use UL 94 V-0 to understand controlled small-scale flammability behavior. It does not by itself establish thermal-runaway resistance, long-duration heat protection or pack-level safety.

UL Solutions states that V-0, V-1 and V-2 are vertical classifications based on how test specimens behave after exposure to a defined ignition source, including self-extinguishing time and flaming drips.[1]

Specification Item

Why Buyers Should Check It

UL 94 Rating

Shows controlled flammability classification

Tested Thickness

UL classification can depend on specimen thickness

Dielectric Performance

Battery insulation must also control electrical risk

Thermal Barrier Performance

Flame retardancy does not equal low heat transfer

Mechanical Integrity

Part must survive assembly and service conditions

Thermal Runaway Validation

Evaluates hazards beyond a small flame test

Why Does Tested Thickness Matter for UL 94 V-0?

A supplier saying “this material is V-0” without specifying thickness can hide an important qualification detail.

Ask for the rating at the actual thickness you intend to purchase. UL certification records demonstrate that the same material family can receive different classifications at different thicknesses.[2]

This is especially important for thin die-cut battery insulation sheets, where procurement may reduce thickness for packaging or cost reasons after the material was originally qualified at a thicker condition.

Why Is UL 94 V-0 Not a Thermal Runaway Test?

A material that self-extinguishes after a small controlled flame may still fail when exposed to a battery jet flame, hot particles and internal pack pressure.

Use thermal-runaway-specific screening when the application requires it. UL 2596 Battery Enclosure Material Screening evaluates material behavior under more representative combinations of high temperature and mechanical stresses associated with battery failure.[3]

UL's BETR guidance specifically notes that thermal runaway can involve jet-like flame, ejected particles and pressure from flaming gases.[4] UL 94 V-0 therefore should not be marketed as proof that a material will stop cell-to-cell propagation.

What Should Be on a Battery Insulation Sheet Specification?

Buying from a one-line specification such as “1 mm, V-0, high temperature” leaves too many engineering variables undefined.

Create the RFQ around the finished application. Specify material construction, thickness and tolerance, dimensions, dielectric requirements, flammability classification and tested thickness, temperature requirement, adhesive or lamination if used, compression requirements and any thermal-runaway test criteria.

Also verify whether the UL rating applies to the exact grade, color and thickness being supplied. If the part is laminated, adhesive-backed or converted into a multilayer construction, determine whether the performance claim applies to the finished construction or only to one raw material layer.

FAQ

What does UL 94 V-0 mean?

It is a vertical flammability classification based on controlled laboratory testing of a material specimen, including limits on burning time and flaming-drip behavior.

Does UL 94 V-0 mean a battery insulation material is fireproof?

No. V-0 is a flammability classification, not a claim that the material is fireproof or capable of surviving every thermal-runaway condition.

Does UL 94 V-0 stop battery thermal runaway?

No. UL 94 does not demonstrate that a barrier will stop thermal propagation between cells. Thermal-runaway protection requires application-specific material and pack-level validation.

Does material thickness affect UL 94 V-0?

Yes. Flammability classifications can depend on specimen thickness, so buyers should verify the rating at the thickness actually being purchased.

What should I ask a battery insulation supplier for?

Request the material datasheet, exact grade, thickness tolerance, relevant UL documentation, dielectric data, thermal properties, mechanical properties and any applicable battery thermal-runaway test evidence.

What is more important than UL 94 V-0 for thermal runaway protection?

No single parameter replaces it. Thermal barrier performance, dielectric behavior, mechanical integrity and representative thermal-runaway testing should be considered together with flammability.

A 15-Year Automotive Wire Harness and Battery Insulation Perspective

After 15 years working with automotive electrical insulation and wire harness systems, one procurement mistake appears repeatedly: turning one certification line into a complete engineering specification. UL 94 V-0 is useful evidence, but battery insulation should be purchased according to its actual electrical, thermal, mechanical and fire-protection function.
